Book: Americanah
Author: Ngozi Adichie
Rating: 5/5
One word:Uncomfortable
Would I recommend: YES. Every African in diaspora + everyone who loves them needs to read it.
REASON:The writing is surgical. The blog posts? Masterclass. But let’s be real - Ifemelu and Obinze wasted 15 YEARS because of pride, timing, and "I need to figure myself out first" energy.
Race in America, love in Lagos, hair, accents, "you've changed". Our last book from Achebe showed us colonization. Adichie showed us what happens after.
HOT TAKE: If Ifemelu just texted Obinze "are we good?" instead of writing 47 blog posts about race, the book would be 100 pages shorter 😂
QUESTIONS FOR YOU 👇
1. Team Ifemelu or Team Obinze? Who hurt who more?
2. The ending: Perfect full-circle love or did it feel rushed after all that pain?
